Women's Commission for Oakland County Starts its Work
The new Women's Commission for Oakland County started getting organized
earlier this year once its members were appointed (each county commissioner
appointed a woman from his/her district). List and photo of the members. The
Chair is Wanda Lohmeier, Clarkston. Vice-Chairs are Christina Kuo, Royal
Oak, and Pamela Bard, Southfield. Recording Secretary is Ann Erickson-
Gault, Troy, and Corresponding Secretary is Joni Hubred-Golden, Farmington.
The latter two women have joined WON.
The Women's Commission has decided to focus on the following topics:
- Women's Economic Autonomy
- Women's Health and Wellness
- Women's Safety
- Women's Leadership
On May 7 the Commission held a public hearing to get input on these topics and
they heard from representatives of 39 organizations, including WON.
County Commissioner Marcia Gershenson (D), Beverly Hills, (and a WON
member) was the moving force behind this new venture. She also received a lot
of help from fellow WON member Sheryl Warren Mitchell, who is Senior Analyst
for the Oakland County Commission, a member of the Michigan Women's
Commission, and a member of the West Bloomfield Parks & Rec Board.
WON board member and West Bloomfield trustee Deb Macon is attending the
commission's meetings to keep WON apprised of the commission's work.
Michigan Go Run Will Train 100+ Women
Michigan Go Run, a program sponsored by the White House Project*, has
enrolled more than 100 women from around the state in its upcoming intensive
campaign training May 30-June 1! Here is the weekend's agenda. They will be
meeting at the Radisson Hotel in Lansing. Shannon Garrett, Michigan Field
Director for the WHP, arrived last October and has been busy getting their
message out even since, making numerous presentations before a wide variety of
organizations across the state. WON and other women's organizations have
been invited to attend the Dessert Networking Reception May 30.
* The White House Project is a national non-profit, whose ultimate goal is to see a woman in the
White House. On the road to that goal they are working hard to get women elected to other offices
from local ones on up. TheWhiteHouseProject.org
