Nov. 3rd Election Story
Women Officials' Network
There were only local elections in
Oakland County in November:  city
councils, mayors, clerk, treasurer; city
library board trustees; school board
trustees (173 positions in all).  The
number of women in these seats
slipped a bit, from 60 to 57.  But there
were some very
bright spots:  2 WON
members who had never run for
office before won their city council
races with the most votes.  These
were
Anne Doyle, Auburn Hills City
Council, and
Maureen McGinnis, Troy
City Council.  Anne and Southfield
Mayor Brenda Lawrence worked
together by walking in each other's
districts.
In the cities, the number of women
elected in Nov. slipped to 26 from 29.
On the library boards the number of
women rose to 10 from the 9.  The
number of women on school boards
slipped from 22 to 21.  [Note: these
numbers only reflect those seats that
were on this year's ballot, not all the
seats in these jurisdictions.]

The White House Project helped Anne
Doyle with its Debate Boot Camp and
two Wayne County winners (Saunteel
Jenkins, Detroit City Council, and
Adrienne Davis, Plymouth-Canton
school board) with the Debate Boot
Camp and MI Go Run, respectively.
